Pope Funeral Homes was established in 1920 by the late Alexander S. Pope, Sr. Our first location was at 315 15th Street S.E. Washington D.C. Mr. Pope, Sr. was a licensed professional from the former Echols Mortuary College in Philadelphia. Mr. Pope Sr., along with his wife the late Mary E. Pope, had a strong commitment to serve the entire community and was actively supportive of families in need. Their commitment to service became the hallmark of Pope Funeral Homes.

The son of Mr. Pope Sr., Alexander S. Pope, Jr., later became a part of the growing family business as a licensed Funeral Director from the same college. Mr. Pope, Jr., along with the support of his wife Mrs. Sandra Pope, also formed a sister company, Limousine Service Associates, which later became one of the largest and successful companies on the East Coast. The list of Limousine clientele included: The White House, Howard Hughes, Michael Jackson, Xerox, Motorola, President John F. Kennedy, and many others.

The Popes decided to dedicate their time to the Funeral business and phased out the Limousine company in the late 70s. In 1971, the firm opened a new location at 2617 Pennsylvania Avenue, S.E. Washington, D.C. This new facility offered the community one of the largest Chapels in the city as well as off-street parking.

In 1992, the Popes had even higher goals and decided to branch into the Maryland community. Mr. & Mrs. Pope, Jr., along with their son Alexander S. Pope, III, a licensed graduate of Catonsville Mortuary School, opened a beautifully decorated facility at 5538 Marlboro Pike, Forestville, Maryland. This facility offered two spacious Chapels seating over 300, a Minister's conference area, Memorial Rooms, a casket display, a Family Choices Room and much more.

The story continues with the Pope's family decision to purchase Cemetery Family Burial Sites. Burial sites at sensible prices are now available at Pope Memorial Gardens located within George Washington Cemetery, Adelphi, MD.

To expand the Pope service to more families, in 1997, the family firm decided to open a facility in Montgomery County. This Family Arrangement Center is located at 8401 Colesville Road, Suite 110, Silver Spring Maryland.
